Bellinger’s Leg Still Healing

Leg Still Healing – Cody Bellinger Weekly Update

After taking spikes to the leg from A’s pitcher Reymin Guduan, the hair line fracture he sustained still causes discomfort when Cody Bellinger runs.  Bellinger took batting practice on Thursday but did not do any running.  The leg is still healing, but as of yet manager Dave Roberts says there’s no timetable for Bellinger’s return.

The initial injury report was less serious but after the swelling went down a scan showed the fracture on the left fibula.

“It’s just a slow process,” Bellinger said to SNLA reporter Kirsten Watson. “It’s more pain tolerance at this point. I’ve been in the training room.  I’ve been working out. Can’t really do much until the bone necessarily heals which takes…I don’t really know.”

There’s talk of Cody visiting the alternate site to face live pitching, but so far he’s stayed with the team. Bellinger is staying close to top form as he can, and anticipates a quick return once it does heal.

“I’ve been hitting in the cage, playing catch every day.  I’m staying baseball-ready.  So once my bone is good to go, I’m ready to play.”

Cody wasn’t the only Dodger to suffer an injury from spikes this year.  On Opening Day, Rockies first base player C.J. Cron struck catcher Austin Barnes in the hand with a hard slide by during the seventh inning.

Cron advanced from third on a wild pitch from Dodger reliever Jimmy Nelson.  Barnes attempted to dive back to the plate for the out but caught a handful of cleats in the process. Home plate umpire Bill Welke ruled Cron safe and Barnes left the game, concerned for his now bloody throwing hand.  Thankfully, Barnes healed quickly and was back behind the plate to catch Buehler two days later.

Bellinger’s leg is still healing.  This kind of injury will take a little bit more time, but I’ve got the feeling he’ll come back just as ready as Barnes did.
