Solid Opening Week for Betts

Mookie Betts Week 1 Recap: April 1-4

A solid opening week for Betts – collecting 5 hits, walking twice, and scoring four times in the four games against the Rockies. Much better looking at the plate than the previous few weeks.

April 1 – Two Hits and Some Bad Luck

Mookie went 2 for 6 this game. In his first at-bat of the season, he took a low 3-2 pitch and blooped it left field for a single. In his next at-bat, he hit the ball much harder but unfortunately lined out to Blackmon in right. He then struck out on a nasty slider down and away, a pitch he usually spits on but in his mini-slump, it’s a pitch he can lay off of. He then doubled in the gap, and later scored on a single by Muncy. In his next 2 at-bats, he grounded out to Story, and check swing blooped out to 2nd base.

April 2 – Hits and Hit by Pitch

He went 2-5 this game. Started the game by lining out to third base. The next AB he doubled down the 3rd baseline and then scored immediately on Seager’s double. He was hit by a pitch his next AB, then grounded out to the pitcher on another check swing, hit the outside slider he can’t spit on but singled to center then popped up on a high fastball.

April 3 – Off Day

He had the day off on Saturday night’s game.

April 4 – Take a Walk or Two

In Sunday’s game, he finished 1 for 3. He walked in each of his first 2 at-bats scoring on a passed ball in the first, the next walk he was erased trying to steal second. He flew out, then reached on an infield single but was erased trying to go to 2nd on a wild throw. His last at-bat of the week was a popout to second base.

Betts made some solid contact this series tallying 5 hits in 3 games. He did still struggle on that slider that breaks to the outside corner and had check-swing outs a few times in the series. He can only get better so that’s good news for us and bad news for opposing teams. All in all, a solid opening week for Mookie Betts.
