GAVIN LUX: SPRING TRAINING WEEK 4 RECAP

GAVIN LUX: SPRING TRAINING WEEK 4 RECAP

In week four of spring training, Gavin Lux seemed to come down to earth a bit. We saw far too many strikeouts, but we also saw him make some good contact nonetheless. He played a solid second base and did not start any games at shortstop this week. It certainly wasn’t a great week, but it wasn’t horrible either.

Lux On Offense

Offensively we’ve seen Lux make solid contact all spring long and putting the barrel on the ball. This week he didn’t do that as much as we would have liked, as he only picked up two hits. One of those was a double in which he came around to score—totaling his spring number to four doubles as of this recap, behind only Taylor for the team lead. His base hit to right against the Athletics on March 26 broke up their no-hitter in the 6th. But those were the only two hits in 11 at-bats. He racked up five strikeouts this week, which was his worst of spring. Granted, two of those came from reigning Cy Young winner Shane Bieber, so we can give him a little bit of a break. He didn’t draw any walks, which is something he hasn’t done well with throughout spring.

Lux on Defense

Defensively, Lux got the job done at second base in four starts. With the regular season approaching, it seems as if his days of starting at shortstop are over unless they decide they want him there over Taylor when Seager needs a day off. Giving Lux only one position to worry about seems like the best way to keep him locked in and not worrying about making even further throws. He’s been great on defense all spring, and I expect to see that carry into the regular season. He’s been handling balls to his left flawlessly, and that has been a weakness in the past.

If you follow me on Twitter or follow our podcast, you know I’ve gone all-in on Gavin Lux, so I’m not concerned at all over one week of spring training. But I know many fans want to cast their doubts on Lux early on, and that’s entirely fair. Here’s to hoping he has a fantastic season and can be the guy we were all waiting to see in 2019.
