GAVIN LUX: SPRING TRAINING WEEK 3 RECAP

We’ve made it through the first three weeks of spring training, and Gavin Lux looks like he isn’t slowing down any time soon. Over a stretch of five games, Lux has added six more hits to his spring training total while also spending some time at shortstop for the first time since March 3rd. Lux is expected to get plenty of playing time this season, and so far this spring, he has shown he’s ready to do just that.

Lux has only made three starts at shortstop this spring, with two of those coming in week 3. In the shift against the White Sox last week, Lux played up the middle behind and made a diving play to his right on a line drive to take away a base hit. He impressed again he came up with a jumping throw from deep short to get the runner at first. He did drop a pop fly in short left, but due to the sun and how far he had to go, it was ruled a base hit. Looking back, he probably should’ve let Pollock take it, but I do appreciate the effort. He had another strong showing at second base in his three other starts and has yet to commit an error this spring.

Lux At The Plate

At the plate, Lux captivated the fans. When he hits the ball, he hits it extremely hard. Lux had two hard-hit singles against the Rockies last week.  One came off his bat at 104.5 MPH and the other a scorching 111 MPH – the hardest hit ball of that game. He had a double against the Diamondbacks at 99.2 MPH off the bat, and when he grounded out in that same game, the exit velocity was 96.3 MPH. Even when Lux is getting out, he crushes the baseball. He picked up a second double this week, and it was a beauty because we saw him shoot it down the left-field line against a lefty.

Lux struck out three times over 12 at-bats this past week, slightly improving on his previous weeks. He also drew his first two walks, both coming against Lucas Giolito, an impressive pitcher so far this spring.

It has been a ton of fun watching Lux over the first three weeks, and I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do with these last handful of games before we head into the regular season. Gavin Lux is playing like he wants that starting second baseman job, and if he continues to produce the way he has, it may be his spot to lose come Opening Day.
