COREY SEAGER: SPRING TRAINING WEEK 3 RECAP

Another week, another couple long balls from Corey Seager. The man is so locked in right now, he may win the 2021 NL MVP. Yes, it’s only spring training and we may be overreacting but the likelihood of Seager replicating his dominant 2020 season grows everyday.

He hit some bombs this week, going to the opposite field again. He finished the week on Saturday tied for the Major League lead in home runs this spring with 5. His 12 RBI are amongst the league leaders as well.

Corey’s two run bomb against the Rockies.

Last Sunday, Seager did have a little trouble in the field, notching his first error of the spring. It was a tough roller but Seager has to make those plays if he wants to be equally as dominant defensively as he is offensively.

Even though we’ve grown accustom to seeing Seager make errant throws in the field, this wasn’t a problem in the 2020 postseason. This tells me that if the focus is there, we won’t have to worry about defensive miscues.

When compared to other top shortstops in the majors, Seager’s defense is quite often ignored. Javy Baez and Francisco Lindor tend to have the most highlight reels when fielding. Even Fernando Tatís Jr. gets love for his cannon of an arm.

If Seager can improve, though, and keep hitting the way he has been for the past year, I expect him to be regarded as the best shortstop in baseball.

This may be a theme this year, with the Padres and their own talented shortstop trying to overcome the Dodgers’ stronghold over the NL West. May whoever have the best shortstop win the World Series!
