TREVOR BAUER: SPRING TRAINING WEEK 2 RECAP

TREVOR BAUER: SPRING TRAINING WEEK 2 RECAP

Trevor Bauer only had one start this week against the Seattle Mariners in Spring Training Week 2. He struggled with command, which didn’t allow him to go as deep as he or Roberts had hoped. The plan was for Bauer to go four innings or 65 pitches, and due to a few walks and some hits, he hit the 65 pitch limit first. Over 3.1 innings, he gave up 3 hits, 1 earned run, 4 walks, and struck out 4.

In the first inning, Bauer walked home a run after walking two and hitting one batter before Roberts rolled the inning over. In the second inning, he allowed three hits and a walk, but a great throw from Will Smith would erase one of the base runners before it could come back to hurt Bauer. He returned for the third and set down the Mariners in order, striking out the final two batters. Roberts allowed him to come out to start the forth. Bauer also went back to his one eye closed pitching this outing and hit a batter while doing so. Will he do this every outing? Even during the regular season? That would be very interesting to witness. Bauer told the media that he pitches with one eye closed as a way to challenge himself.  For this game, however, he said he was having vision problems that some breathing techniques seemed to clear up.  It’s also noted that he uses this one eye technique during the offseason to work on his command. Bauer has always been viewed as a polarizing figure, and this certainly adds to that narrative. Like Roberts and many others have mentioned, he always seems to have a method to his madness.
