Blake TreinenDodger reliever Blake Treinen is from Osage City, Kansas. Initially drafted by the Marlins in 2010, the Miami team later rescinded their offer when a medical review revealed a shoulder inflammation. The Oakland Athletics selected him in the seventh round of the 2011 draft and used him as a starter on their minor league teams without much success. Because of this, the A’s traded him as a minor leaguer to the Washington Nationals.

Blake Treinen made his MLB debut with the Nationals in April of 2014. It was during this season that he found his talent as a reliever. The Nats traded him back to Oakland, where he had an All Star season in 2018. That year, he pitched one of the best relief seasons ever, posting a 0.78 and 38 saves as the closer for the Oakland Athletics. He garnered both Cy Young and MVP votes in 2018, recognition that is nearly unheard of for relievers.

However, Treinen battled injuries in 2019 and put up a 4.95 ERA. The A’s released him after the season. As they often do, the Dodgers thought they saw something in Treinen, and signed him to a one year deal. And saw something they did! Blake’s been nearly unhittable in his first half of the season with the Dodgers, stepping into a set-up role for closer Kenley Jansen.

While Treinen struggled with command early in the season, he’s turned into a ground ball machine. He’s really settled in in Los Angeles. Whether he’s used to get out of jams or starts his own inning, he’s always incredibly calm and just gets the job done, an incredibly important quality for a reliever in high-pressure situations. Treinen figures to be a crucial part of the bullpen as the Dodgers head to the 2020 Postseason.
