Bauer vs. Lauer, Dodgers vs. Brewers – 4/29/21

Bauer Lauer

After a good win from the Boys in Blue yesterday, they began a four-game series against the Brewers in Milwaukee. The Dodgers would open the series with Bauer on the mound. the Brewers called up lefty Eric Lauer. Coming into this game, Lauer had a career 4.75 ERA. But against the Dodgers, he was 5-0 with a 2.11 ERA. The Dodgers had to either figure him out or get to the bullpen and do their damage there. Unfortunately, neither of those happened tonight.

Bauer vs. Lauer

Early on in this one, Bauer struggled with his command, and it only felt like a matter of time before it would become an issue. It looked like that would be the third inning when he gave up a leadoff double to Jackie Bradley Jr., But Bauer settled in and retired the next three hitters stranding the go-ahead run at second. In the fourth inning, he got the first two outs before issuing a walking. Shaw would make Bauer pay for not retiring Garcia, as he goes deep and gives the Brewers a 2-0 lead.

Bauer didn’t have his best stuff, but he managed to keep the game close. Outside of the fourth inning, whenever a runner got on base, he did a great job working around it. Even without his command, he still had a solid night on the mound.

Bauer’s final line: 8 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 SO, 1 HR.

Sleepy Bats

Unfortunately, the offense gave me absolutely nothing to write about in this one. Mookie drew a four-pitch walk, and Seager swung at the first pitch, grounding into a double play. It was an excellent play from Urías and Wong to turn the double play. Some argued it was selfish of Seager to swing at the first pitch after watching Mookie take four straight balls. The double play would end up really hurting them when Turner and Smith singed with two down and were left stranded.

Their last opportunity came in the ninth, and they ALMOST pulled something out. Hader came into pitch, and he hadn’t given up a run this season, so the Dodgers had their work cut out. He’d also only given up one hit all season. Taylor quickly doubled Hader’s season total when he led off the inning with a base hit. Hader balked, moving Taylor into scoring position trailing 2-0. Pollock and Neuse would strikeout, leaving it up to Austin Barnes. Barnes put up a good AB and singled, driving in the Dodgers only run of the game. Betts had his chance to do something significant but ultimately flew out to end the game. The Dodgers were right back in the loss column.

Return to Frustrating Form

After an offensive explosion in yesterday’s game, it felt like this team may have figured something out. That was not the case tonight. They went back to exactly how they looked the previous games against the Reds and Padres. Right now, it feels like this team has no fight. They don’t even look like they enjoy being out there. Luckily for all parties involved, it’s a very long season, and this team is too talented for things to keep going this way. Let’s do it again tomorrow with different results. Dodgers will throw a bullpen game, and first pitch is at 5:10 PM PDT.
