Bauer’s No-Hitter Against The Rockies Broken Up

Trevor Bauer Recap: April 2 vs. Rockies

Trevor Bauer made his Dodgers debut on Friday night against the Rockies, and he looked fantastic out of the gate. He had his slider working really well for him and was playing with a ton of emotion. Before Friday’s start, Bauer had only made one career start at Coors Field that came back in 2017 that didn’t go particularly well. He had a much better performance his second time around and his first in Dodger Blue, chasing a no-hitter for most of his outing.

FIRST INNING

Bauer had a relatively easy first inning of work in his Dodgers debut. He got Tapia to fly out and then struck out Fuentes with a filthy slider that wasn’t even close in the zone for his first strikeout as a Dodger. The no-hitter almost ended before it ever even had the chance to begin, but an incredible diving play from Gavin Lux robs Story of a base hit to end the inning.

SECOND INNING

After a 12-pitch first inning, Bauer would come out and do the same thing in the second. Bellinger made a nice running grab to retire Blackmon for the first out before Bauer would allow his first baserunner of the game on a 4-pitch walk. After a Cron walk, Bauer would get McMahon to fly out and then get Owings to chase a cutter out of the zone to end the inning.

THIRD INNING

What if I told you Bauer set down the Rockies in the third on 12 pitches again? Because he did just that. Nunez led off the inning with a weak ground ball to Lux for the first out. After striking out Senzatela with a 4-seamer, he would get Tapia to swing and miss at a cutter up in the zone and then stare him down while making his way back to the dugout.

FOURTH INNING

Bauer would continue to cruise through the order, and his second time through was no different. After getting Fuentes to groundout, Bauer would strikeout Story with a beautiful slider, and he was PUMPED. Blackmon would ground out to Lux on the grass in shallow right field for the third out of the inning.

FIFTH INNING

A throwing error from Turner would give the Rockies their first runner in scoring position with nobody out. Bauer would go onto strikeout the side in the inning and strand the runner at second. After striking out Nunez on a knuckle curve, he let out a loud yell on the mound and did his famous strut back to the dugout. This was easily his most dominant inning of the night, and doing it all with the runner on second made it that much sweeter.

SIXTH INNING – Whispers of Bauer’s No-Hitter

The sixth inning was another quick one for Bauer. He set Hilliard and Tapia down on eight pitches and then struck out Fuentes for the second time of the game on a slider. Another 13-pitch inning for Bauer.

SEVENTH INNING

Through six innings, Bauer pitched well and looked like he could start chasing history. But that ended quickly when Story led off the inning with a single to left field. Bauer’s no-hitter was over. Blackmon would then take him deep, and now the shutout was no longer intact as well. He walked Cron, and McMahon joined in on the fun and hit a ball to deep right center for the Rockies’ second home run of the inning. It would take nine pitches, but he’d get Hampson swinging on a cutter for his 10th strikeout of the night and the final batter he would face.

Coors Field is always tricky, and you never really know what you’re going to get from your pitchers until they start throwing the ball. All things considering, I’ll take Bauer’s outing. Any time you can get innings out of a starter in Colorado and don’t give up a ton of runs, it feels like a win. Taking a no-hitter into the seventh at Coors is no small feat, either.

Bauer will make his next start on Wednesday against the Athletics in Oakland.

On his start day, Bauer announced that every month this season, he will choose a non-profit in Los Angeles to donate $1,000 to for every strikeout he racks up. This month he has partnered with Think Together, and his donation will help fund afterschool STEM and robotics programming. You can read more about that here.
