Blake Treinen had an interesting, mixed week.

He had one of the best, most dominant outings I’ve ever seen from a reliever, and he got knocked around a little bit in Colorado. On Tuesday in San Diego, however, he came in after Ferguson left with an injury (Caleb got the first out) in the 8th inning and struck out the first batter he faced on threw absolutely devastating pitches (man that sinker is fun to watch!) and then got a groundout on his next pitch for the last out of the inning.

Sunday in Colorado was a different story. Blake gave up three runs and only got one out, but I’m going to attribute a lot of it to bad luck and good hitting by the Rockies because some of the pitches they hit for soft singles (he didn’t give up any big contact) were almost in the dirt and moved a ridiculous amount. Sometimes you just have to give credit to the other team.

Treinen’s week was still a good one in my opinion, considering just the quality of pitches he threw and that almost all of them were strikes. This is important because command was a big issue for him at the beginning of the season, but he’s really improved on that and I was happy to see it continue this week. While he did have a bad outing in Colorado, he’s yet to give up a home run in 2020 (or really almost any extra base hits), and has been throwing strikes, a lot of them with absolutely disgusting movement.

Treinen figures to be the primary set-up man for closer Kenley Jansen during the postseason.
