Dodgers reliefJoe Kelly Weekly Update pitcher Joe Kelly has had a pretty explosive career in the big leagues. Most Dodger fans know him for breaking Hanley Ramirez’s ribs with a pitch in the 2013 NLCS with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Kelly broke the hearts of many Dodger fans as a member of the Red Sox during the 2018 World Series. Additionally, Kelly is well known for retaliating against a dirty slide against the New York Yankees. He fought with Tyler Austin of the Yankees after hitting him with a pitch.

Joe then signed a three year deal with the Dodgers, his hometown team. After getting off to a rough start, he’s been great for the team. He didn’t pitch well in 2019 NLDS Game 5. Mismanaged, he served up a 10th inning, tie breaking grand slam to Howie Kendrick of the eventual World Champion Washington Nationals.

Kelly, however, won the fans of Dodger fans when he threw at Houston Astros Alex Bregman and Carlos Correa while pitching a scoreless inning in Houston earlier in 2020. As he struck out Correa, he made a crying face that set the internet ablaze. He also uttered some choice comments at Correa, who insulted Dodgers MVP Cody Bellinger after Bellinger criticized them for cheating in the 2017 World Series.

MLB gave Joe Kelly an unprecedented suspension for his action. But the suspension make him more a martyr and warrior for the “integrity” of the game in the eyes of fans. Needless to say, Kelly is now a universally beloved Dodger. While he can struggle to command his 100 MPH fastball and nasty breaking ball, he’s been effective out of the back end of the Dodgers bullpen during his time in LA.
