According to Craig Mish who covers the Marlins, the Dodgers have an interest and reached out to the Marlins about their First Baseman and Corner Outfielder Garrett Cooper. Today the Marlins signed Adam Duvall to a 2-year deal and now there’s a logjam in the outfield and Jesus Aguilar at 1st. It makes some sense that he’s available.

Cooper is already 30 and had some unfortunate injury issues the first 2 seasons but he’s been healthy the last 2 and has been a pretty good hitter. He’s owed only 1.9 million this year in his first year of arbitration. Last year in the short-season he hit .283 had an on-base percentage of .353 and slugged .500. He’s a big right-handed bat and I do mean big as he stands at 6’6. In his career, he’s hit the ball hard over 40% of the time. He’s been good at barreling the ball and cutting down on swings and misses. He’s been a better contact hitter against righties but he’s a better power hitter against lefties so he fills that need.

Cooper playing first base would allow Muncy to move to the third, which likely means the end of Justin Turner. Cooper is also a corner outfielder so he could see time there should Betts or the left fielder need a day off. Cooper could also be a platoon option with Edwin Rios where Cooper gets the at-bats vs lefties and Rios against Righties. Could also just be a big right-handed bat off the bench although he needs to be more than that. This would allow the Dodgers the ability to maneuver around how they want to use him. He’s a decent defender so shouldn’t hurt the Dodgers in any way on that end.

Would this be a good move for the Dodgers? It would likely mean the end of Turner but it lends to more flexibility. This would be a way for the Dodgers to trade away some prospects to open up roster space on the 40 man. Also, he’s a redhead so at least the Dodgers would still have one of those! Would you guys be in favor of this?
