Dodgers trade Dylan Floro to the Marlins

According to Jeff Passan, the Dodgers have made another trade today. This time trading away relief pitcher Dylan Floro in exchange for relief pitcher Alex Vesia and Right-Handed Pitcher Kyle Hurt. Floro will probably be most known for his huge strikeout in game 6 of the World Series against Randy Arrozarena on 3 pitches. This one kind of sucks for me because I was a big fan of Floro and the movement he got on pitches. But let’s take a look at what they’re getting in Alex Vesia.

Alex Vesia is a 24-year-old left-handed relief pitcher from California. In his 2 seasons in the Minors in 100 innings had an Era of 1.62 and struck out 12.4 batters per 9 innings while only walking 2. It’s clear he’s got good stuff while also being able to control it. He once threw 35 consecutive scoreless innings in the minors and was seen as the future closer of the Marlins. He did pitch 4 innings in 2020 that did not go well. He walked 7, struck out 5, and gave up 10 runs. It was a struggle in his first action in the big leagues. He’s a 4 seam fastball, Change-up, and slider combo pitcher. He gets a lot of movement of his change-up, and his fastball sits at about 92-93 MPH. He struggled with locating in the big leagues, but the Dodgers saw the potential in him and think they could make him even better.

Kyle Hurt was a 5th round draft pick from this past year’s draft out of USC. He stands at 6’3 and his Fastball can get to 96. Scouts think his change-up is a plus pitch already and his slider and curveball have flashed potential, but he’s been a bit inconsistent with his pitches. His fastball is hard but it’s straight and flat thus hittable. He also doesn’t have great command at the moment. one scout said “he struggles to put together more than a few good innings at a time.” Scouts are also concerned with his work ethic. This sounds like he could be in for a bullpen role sooner rather than later. The Dodgers see potential in the Southern California product and they’re hoping to bring that out of him.

Sad to see Floro go, but what are your guys’ thoughts on this trade? Let me know.
