CLINCH WATCH 2021 – Diamondbacks Still A Team – 9/20/2021

With all but one team taking an off-day, all attention of the NL West is focused on the Arizona Diamondbacks.  They started a four game series against the Braves at Chase Field and they….probably wanted the off-day instead.

Diamondbacks Still A Team

The Braves trompled the D-backs 11-4 and if trompled isn’t a word, it should be.  I imagine that’s the noise a startled horse’s hooves makes when it’s quite suddenly stomping on and murdering a snake.  Because that’s exactly what happened.

24-year-old Arizona starter Humberto Mejía was tagged for a walloping six runs, three of them coming in the disastrous 7-run fifth inning.  After giving up an RBI double to Austin Riley, Mejía was pulled for reliever Taylor Widener.

Questionable choice, it turns out.  Widener gave up three more runs, one of which was a two run long ball to Adam Duvall.  It was a 483 foot rocket, the fourth longest MLB home run this season and the second longest homer at Chase Field in the Statcast era.  Atlanta send twelve batters to the box before Widener was able to strike out Ozzie Albies.  I’m guessing Albies was less peeved about it than he could have been, considering he’d already hit an RBI single and came around to score earlier in the inning.

Reliever and former Dodger minor leaguer Brett de Geus also gave up two of the runs – one on a homer, one on a wild pitch.  Not a great night for Diamondback hurlers.  You could make a gallery of grimaces from the mound.

And not very good news out of the batter’s box, either.  Only Ketel Marte had more than one hit on the night, though Daulton Varsho’s lone hit was a triple.  They did show some plate discipline, however, earning four walks and only striking out six times.

Look, I poke fun at the Diamondbacks, but like…something’s gotta give, right?

Right?

Diamondbacks fall to 48-102 for a .320 win percentage and they are tied once again for worst record in MLB with the Orioles.
