CLINCH WATCH 2021 – Dodgers Nab Second Clinch Of Season – 9/14/2021

Dodgers Defeat Diamondbacks

Gonsolin came out and went five scoreless, three Dodgers went yard, and the Dodgers clinched their ninth postseason spot in a row.

Max Muncy knocked one out using Albert Pujols’s bat, moments after Joe Davis set up the moment perfectly with his spot-on commentary. How can you not be romantic, etc.?

Trea Turner and Will Smith also both went over the fences.  Seager made a hell of a running catch.  JT snatched a liner out of the air.  Jansen shut it down hard on twelve pitches.

After putting up a stellar season with major holes in the lineup night after night, the Dodgers are looking (mostly) whole, hale, and hearty.  And hot damn, it’s feeling like a smoking hot September in Los Angeles.  When AJ Pollock comes back from the IL…y’all…

It’s reported that the Dodgers celebrated the clinch with a champaign toast in the clubhouse.  Sigh.  I mean, I’m glad to see the eye on October, but like…I kinda want the swimming pool moment as well.  We were playing the D-backs after all.  And the rooks deserve a bit of razzle-dazzle.  But I can’t fault the focus, so play on, gentlemen, play on.

Dodgers improve to 93-53.  Diamondbacks drop to 47-98.

Padres Fall From Wild Card Spot

After their 6-1 loss to the Giants tonight, the Padres fell out of the Wild Card slot, replaced by the Cardinals.  Hopefully this will light a fire under their ass and heat them up.

The lone Padre run came from an RBI groundout from Trent Grisham to score Jurickson Profar.

On the Gigantic side, Posey hit his 18th home run of the year.  He came around to score again in the 3rd on a pickoff error by pitcher Jake Arrieta.  Then in a rare Stadium Boundary review, Belt scored when a wild throw from Machado went into the netting behind a rail, making it a dead ball and advancing the runners.  Baseball!

Giants improve to 95-50, Padres drop to 74-70 and, as mentioned, slip out of the wild card slot.

Rockies Hold Off Braves for Close Win

Colorado pitching performed better than expected against the Braves. Starter Jon Gray went 5 IP with five hits, two earned runs, and seven strikeouts.

If you run the numbers, Atlanta definitely had advantage on the pitching side.  None of the men the Rockies sent to the mound had an ERA under 4.  But Trevor Story turned 94 mph right around to dead center on Braves starter Touki Toussaint to leave the yard into the batter’s eye.  The solo homer tied the game at one.  A walk, and two singles put the Rockies ahead.

Atlanta tied it again in the 4th on a Dansby Swanson double, but Colorado answered again in the fifth and lead from there on out.

Former Dodger and all-time great snacker Joc Pederson pinch hit against the Rockies, hoping for a Joc Pop to walk it off, but he struck out.  I was going to say it was a shame we wouldn’t get a Joctober this year with Atlanta’s 76-67 record, but the NL East is such a hot mess that they are actually leading the division right now with that nonsense.

Rox improve to 67-78 and are possibly researching ways to move divisions.
