Dodgers Single-A and Double-A – Konu’s Prospect Watch

On this week’s Prospects Watch, I’ll get into my favorite prospects from Single-A and Double-A and how they fared this week. These are the prospects I’m most excited for and players I think will be a big part of the Dodgers team in the future.

Single-A Great Lake Loons Prospects – Andy Pages, Bobby Miller, Brandon Lewis

Andy Pages of single-A Great Lakes Loons had seven hits in 24 at-bats and a .318 average. He accumulated 3 doubles, 4 RBIs, and drew 6 walks in that time as well. He struggled in early July, so it’s nice to see him put together a really nice week he can build off of. So far, he’s shown that he can draw walks, hit for power, play good defense.  He shows a really strong throwing arm and even has stolen some bases, flashing a bit of everything.

Bobby Miller, the right handed Dodger first-round draft pick in 2020, also in single-A Great Lakes, went 3 innings, striking out six. His four seam fastball sat between 97-98 MPH and reached as high as 99. His two seamer went 96 with some run.  He really worked his change-up to both lefties and righties, inducing those famous pitching ninja sword swings. He’s been really good this year. I know he’s being slow-played, but I would like to see him moved up to double A for some work there.

Lastly, we’ll look at Great Lakes Loons third baseman Brandon Lewis. Lewis was a fourth-round pick by the Dodgers in the 2019 draft. So far this year, he leads all Dodgers prospects in home runs with 18. He’s currently hitting .286 and slugging .588, which is incredible. He’s showing great raw power. Needs to get the strikeouts down, but when he hits the ball he makes loud contact. This past week, Lewis went 10 for 24 which equates to a .417 average. He had 4 home runs and 11 RBIs. He’s still only 22, so looking forward to seeing his progression as he moves up in the farm system.

Double-A Tulsa Drillers Prospects – Michael Busch and Miguel Vargas

First from Tulsa, my favorite prospect, left-handed smooth swinging Michael Busch. Don’t think I’ve been this high on a prospect since Cody Bellinger. Michael Busch went eight for twenty this week which amounts to a .400 average. He tallied two doubles, two home runs, and 6 rbi’s. Busch also walked 7 times which he’s extremely good at. Busch was hit by a pitch in late May which caused him to miss 10 days, and he struggled mightily after that. But in the month of July, he’s hitting .313 and Ops’ing at 1.172.  Much more like the Busch we witnessed early on. I hope to see him promoted to Triple-A soon if not on the Major League club altogether.

Next, we’ll take a look at another double-A player: third baseman Miguel Vargas. Vargas bumped up from single-A to double-A when Kody Hoese went on the IL and Vargas has done nothing but hit since. Vargas reminds me a little bit of Justin Turner at the plate. He never tries to do too much up there, he has a nice easy swing and just takes what the pitchers are giving him. He won’t wow you with exit velocity or huge power numbers but he has been able to put the ball in play and hit wherever he’s been. This week he went eight for 26, a double, a home run, and 4 rbi’s. The one thing he needs to work on more is taking walks.
