Betts Shows Some Signs of Life at the Plate

Mookie Betts Shows Some Signs of Life at the Plate – Recap: May 3-9

Mookie picked up 7 hits in 6 games this week while also walking 5 times. The Dodgers didn’t have a good week, but Betts showed some signs of life at the plate. Could this be what gets the offense rolling? How did Mookie far against the Cubs and Angels this week? Let’s take a look.

Mookie vs. the Cubs

May 3rd  – Rainout

This game was rained out, thus making May 4 a two 7 inning double-headers.

May 4th – Doubleheaders

Mookie went a combined 3-for-7 in the doubleheader, including a leadoff double in game two. In the first game, he went 2-4 with singles to right field and left field, respectfully. In game two, he went 1-for-3 with a walk and a steal. The weak offense and struggling bullpen couldn’t overcome the Cubs, and the Dodgers lost both games.

May 5th – Sweep

The final game of the series was the hardest game of the week for Mookie as it was his worst. He went 0-for-6 and struck out three times in the loss to the Cubs. Twice, he struck out looking, and the other time he chased a pitch way outside, seems like he had a difficult time picking up the ball that game.

May 6th was an off day as the Dodgers traveled back to California for their three-game set with the Angels.

Mookie Betts vs. Angels

May 7th – Back in California

Mookie started the Angels series by going 2-for-4. Unfortunately, it didn’t matter much as the Dodgers got their ass beat. In the last three at-bats in the game for Betts, he hit a ground-rule double, walked, and then blasted his fourth home run of the year.

May 8th – Magical Tag

The wild game that saw the Dodgers barely hang on for a 14-11 win. Betts was pulled early as the Dodgers were up 13-0. Mookie went 2-for-3 with a walk and four RBI. He singled with the bases loaded and then singled again with runners on 2nd and 3rd.  Oddly enough, it might have been a slightly awkward tag from Angels third base player José Rojas that started the Dodgers run of good luck. The situation definitely lightened the mood and helped the team relax and remember that baseball can be fun again.

May 9th – Back in the L Column

Mookie started the game with a 10 pitch at-bat that resulted in a walk. Betts didn’t record a hit this game, but he did walk once more and hit the ball hard when he did swing.  It wasn’t enough to overcome the Angels, and the Dodgers drop their fifth straight series in a row.

On the whole, it was a better week for Mookie Betts, who shows some signs of life at the plate.  He wasn’t necessarily on fire but much better than we saw the previous two weeks. Unfortunately, Betts finding some semblance of offense didn’t lead to wins as the Dodgers won a single game the entire week.
