May Versus the Rockies

Dustin May made one appearance this week against the Rockies on April 14th. It was a bit of an up-and-down start for him as he only went four and one-third innings. I felt like he could have finished off the inning to make it five, but Roberts pulled the plug on him.

May Versus the Rockies – Starting Off Hot

Dustin May had a strong first inning, only throwing six pitches. He struck out lead-off hitter Garrett Hampson with relative ease with a nice cutter that broke away. He then got Tapia and Story to ground out to end the inning.

In May’s second inning of work, he faced four batters, striking out one. He gave up a single up the middle before striking out Hilliard on a 99 MPH fastball away. He then got an at-bat in the bottom half of the inning, and he sacrificed Barnes to second base.

In the 3rd inning, he gave up a single to Jon Gray on a 100 MPH fastball; before that, he struck out the catcher Nuñez on a two-seamer running in. He then strikes out Hampson again before giving up a single to Tapia. He got Story to ground out to end the inning.

He gave up a hit in the fourth inning to Ryan McMahon, but other than that, an easy inning for May, striking out one.

Shaky Fifth Inning

The fifth inning is where May ran into a bit of trouble. He started the inning with a strikeout of pinch-hitter Nuñez, then gave up a single to right. Hampson reached on a bunt single, then Tapia walked on four pitches. Trevor Story singled in a run, and that concluded May’s night.

May really lost command in that inning. Nothing was easy. He left the game being responsible for all of the runners as the bases were loaded and another run would come across to score. May finished giving up 2 runs in those 4 innings, striking out 6, and walking 1, while giving up 7 hits.

Before that last inning, he was locating pretty well and getting his strikeouts. He did give up some hits, but for the most part, he looked good. Not sure what changed for May in the fifth, but credit the Rockies for getting to him. He was good, but I’m hoping his next start looks more like the A’s start.

Still, the Dodgers managed a 4-2 victory with Knebel in line for the win.
