The Angry Kenley – Saturday Sips

The Big Man has been pitching angry, and touching 97 on the radar gun.  Our friend Brett the Baseball Bartender has come up with a proper salute to our closer’s focused, fiery rage – the Angry Kenley.  It’s a sweet and spicy mix with a smooth finish, much like the Big Man himself.

INGREDIENTS LINEUP

2oz Del Maguey Vida Mezcal

.5oz Pierre Ferrand Orange Curaçao

.5oz Ancho Reyes Chili Liqueur

.75-.5oz Pineapple Juice

.5oz Lime Juice

1 dash Aztec Chocolate Bitters (optional)

BATTING ORDER

Shake with ice until chilled, then rim glass with salt or chili powder (optional) and pour over single large ice cube or serve neat.

The Angry Kenely 2
Mood lighting is optional, too.

Notes From Brett:

Mezcal can get expensive, so the one used here is a reasonably-priced workhorse that you won’t feel guilty mixing into cocktails.  The Pierre Ferrand is not make or break for this drink; any triple sec or curaçao that you enjoy the taste of should work fine. I just like this one because it has a more rich, complex flavor than others I’ve tried.

The pineapple juice can be tricky and should range anywhere from .5oz to .75oz , depending on how sweet your particular juice is.  Pineapple juice can very easily overpower other flavors in a cocktail.  If your juice is particularly sweet or acidic, aim for less juice, as it needs to play nice with some other flavors in this drink.  The Ancho Reyes adds some heat to complement the smoke of the mezcal. The lime tempers the sweetness of the pineapple and curaçao.  The chocolate bitters are purely optional. I liked the cocktail perfectly well before I added them, but the modest single dash brought out something fun in the drink that I didn’t regret at all.
