No Decision, Loss for Trevor Bauer This Week

No Decision, Loss for Trevor Bauer This Week

May 4th vs. Chicago Cubs – No Decision

Facing the Chicago Cubs, Bauer came off of a complete game loss from his own last outing. The Dodgers were also coming back onto the field after losing the first doubleheader game earlier in the day in Chicago.

Bauer started off on shaky ground.  He walked the leadoff man (who just happened to be former Dodgers outfielder & 2020 World Series winner Joc Pederson) and then issued a second walk to Kris Bryant. He then sat down the next three batters, getting Anthony Rizzo and Jason Heyward swinging.

The second inning started with another walk from Bauer. Luckily, there was a somewhat similar ending to it as the first. He retired the next three batters, striking out Tony Wolters and pitcher Keegan Thompson.  In the third, Bauer struck out Pederson for his fifth K of the night. He gave up a double to Kris Bryant but then induced Rizzo to pop out and David Bote to end the inning.

Bauer gave up a leadoff home run to Heyward in the fourth, giving the Cubs a 1-0 lead. Trevor then gave up a walk and a single, putting runners on the corners with no outs. A sacrifice bunt put two runners into scoring position.  Matt Duffy struck out in a pinch-hitting situation, but Bauer grazed Pederson with a ball to load the bases for Kris Bryant. In a tight spot, Bauer struck out Bryant swinging to end the inning.

The fifth started with a leadoff triple to Anthony Rizzo when centerfielder Chris Taylor lost the ball against the ivy wall. Bote flew out to Mookie Betts, but the hard contact chased him from the game.  He was replaced by reliever Victor González.

His final tally of the night: 4.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 7 SO, 1 HR, 1 HBP

May 9th vs. Los Angeles Angels – Loss

Coming off the loss to the Cubs, where he got a no-decision, Bauer took the mound for the rubber match in the last of a three-game series at Angels Stadium.

After a flyout for David Fletcher, Shohei Ohtani reached on an infield single. Trout grounded out to Seager but moved Ohtani to second base. Jared Walsh struck out, looking to end the inning.  Bauer retired the side in order for the second inning.  Justin Upton and José Rojas both struck out, Upton looking.

Phil Gosselin started the third with a leadoff double but was caught stealing second on a throw from catcher Will Smith.  Drew Butera struck out swinging for Bauer’s fourth strikeout of the game. Fletcher hit a single, then Bauer issued back-to-back walks again, putting Ohtani and Trout on to load the bases with two outs.  At this point, Bauer had already thrown 30+ pitches in the third inning alone. Despite his recent struggles at the plate, Jared Walsh bounced a line drive ball to the right-field corner for a ground-rule double. Angels lead 2-1. Bauer finally ends the inning, striking out Upton swinging.

Bauer faced the minimum in the last of his three innings, with notable strikeouts of both Ohtani and Trout.

His final tally of the afternoon: 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 9 SO, 0 HR.

Trevor Bauer ended his week with a no-decision and a loss but only gave up three runs in total.  The Dodger bats couldn’t seem to rally behind him on the mound.  Cold bats lost more than a few games for starting pitching on this road trip.
