Dave Roberts Ejected in 3-1 Dodgers Loss – 4/30/21

In the middle of 14 straight games, the Dodgers decided to give the starters an extra day of rest and go with a bullpen game. Edwin Uceta would be making his major league debut. After last night’s tough loss, the offense was hoping to get off to a quick start. Once again, that was not the case.  Even after Dave Roberts was ejected, the Boys in Blue still remained in a funk.

Bullpen Game for Dodgers

Uceta retired the first batter he faced in this one when he got Wong to pop out to start his night. He walked the next batter he faced and then ended his first inning with a bit of help from Narváez. With a runner on first and one out, Narváez grounded out to first.  The Dodgers get the lead runner at second, and on the throw to first, no one was covering. The ball bounced off the Brewers dugout, and Uceta tosses it to first, and Turner tags out Narváez, who had made the turn to second before retiring to first. Welcome to the big leagues, Edwin Uceta.

In his second inning of work, Uceta gave up a leadoff single to Garcia before striking out Shaw for his first big league strikeout. A base hit from McKinney turned into an out for the Dodgers when Urías tried going first to third, and Pollock made a nice throw to get him at third. Uceta struck out Peralta on a defensive swing to end his day. Uceta didn’t have the strongest of outings, but all things considering he handled himself on the mound.

Uceta’s final line: 2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO, 1 HR

Peralta vs Pollock

Through the first four innings, the Dodgers were still looking for their first hit against Peralta. Pollock ended the no-hitter and shutout with one swing, homering to left field to lead off the fifth. Dodgers were trailing 2-1 and got their first hit and run off their back. Pollock is one of the few Dodgers currently hitting the ball well.  He picked up his second home run in the last seven games.

With this being a bullpen game, we were bound to see plenty of arms in this one. Alexander was the first out of the bullpen and had a 1-2-3 inning in the third. Mitch White, who got called up yesterday, threw two perfect innings and looked really strong in his outing. González got in an inning of work and gave up a two-out walk and single before getting out of the inning unscathed. Nelson took over in the seventh and struggled a bit with his command walking the leadoff batter and eventually balked, allowing him to take second. He got the second out of the inning, and then Roberts brought in Treinen, who finished the inning.

Dave Roberts Ejected

The Dodgers offense has been pretty flat, and with as bad as these umps have been this season, many fans wondered when Roberts might get ejected to spark the team. That finally came in tonight’s game when Taylor got called on a check swing he clearly did not go around on. Ángel Hernández ejected a clearly frustrated Dave Roberts from the dugout.  Roberts made his way to first base to have a word with Hernández, but ultimately left the field.  Taylor ended up flying out to the warning track in right field to end the inning.

Still Not Fired Up

After only throwing two pitches in the seventh, Treinen came out again to pitch the eighth. He gave up a leadoff double that came around to score after back-to-back ground outs giving the Brewers a 3-1 lead. Treinen finished off the eighth inning, striking out Garcia.

Dodgers saw Hader in the ninth for the second night in a row. Seager, Turner, and Muncy were tasked with trying to get something started against one of the most dominant closers in baseball this season. All three went down swinging, and the Dodgers dropped another game to the Brewers.

With tonight’s loss, the Dodgers have lost seven of their last nine and look completely lost at the plate. After picking up nine hits in last night’s game, they only managed two hits in this one. There doesn’t seem to be any consistency coming from this lineup right now, and it has been tough to watch. The good news: the bullpen only gave up three runs over nine innings.  Two of those runs came from a pitcher who will probably be optioned before we wake up tomorrow. Dodgers can still split the series with the Brewers if they win their next two.

Tomorrow – first pitch at 4:10 PM PDT.
