Up and Down Week for Dustin May

Up and Down Week for Dustin May Against the Mariners, Padres

Dustin May had an up and down week of pitching for the Dodgers. So far, it looks like the rise in strikeouts is for real as he continues to strike out a ton of hitters. He pitched 11 innings this week and struck out 18, including a career-high 10 against the Padres.

May vs. the Mariners: Up and Down

May pitched the opener for the short, two game road series agains the Mariners.  He struck out two in the opening inning against the Mariners and gave up a single to Ty France and a two-run home run to give the Mariners a 2-0 lead. In the 2nd inning, he surrendered another home run, this time to Taylor Trammel. He hit Crawford with a pitch, but he was later thrown out to end the inning.

In the third inning, May started to settle down. He struck out two, including Mitch Haniger and Kyle Seager, for the 2nd time each and had his first 1-2-3 inning of the night. He then struck out two more in the 4th inning, but did give up another run. Torrens reached on an error by Chris Taylor, and Trammel doubled him home.

Two more strikeouts for May in the 5th. Getting Haniger for the third time with breaking balls. He hit Ty France with a pitch but got Kyle Seager to fly out to deep center to end the 5th and end May’s night. As he goes 5 innings, 4 runs, 3 earned, and 8 strikeouts.

The Dodgers lost 3-4.

May vs. the Padres: All Up but Let  Down

The Dodgers faced the Padres at home this time.  May had an easy and breezy 1st inning, only needing nine pitches. He induced two groundouts and struck out Grisham in between. The second inning was more of the same. He struck out Cronenworth on a nasty breaking ball in and induced two groundouts for another easy inning. Dustin May collected two strikeouts in the 3rd and again another easy inning. May was rolling so far.

In the 4th inning, May had his only blimp as he left a fastball down the middle, and Tatís hit his fifth home run of the series. He then proceeded to strike out the side. In the fifth inning, he gave up a long single to Cronenworth, who then stole second. Mateo popped out to right, and then May struck out the last two batters to get out of the inning.

May struck out Kim to begin the 6th inning. He then walked Tatís Jr, who stole second base. He started to lose his command a bit in the 6th, getting longer at-bats than the previous five innings. Grisham grounded out, though, and he jammed Machado getting him to pop out to Seager.

Strong six innings for May, walking one, giving up 1 run, 2 hits, and striking out a career-high 10! Great work from May against this dangerous lineup.

Unfortunately, the bullpen wasn’t as effective and the Dodgers lost 8-7.

The week started with an up and down appearance against the Mariners, followed by one of the best starts in his career against the Padres, getting his breaking ball to get the Padres hitters out.
