Bauer Rematch Against Padres

Bauer Rematch Against Padres – Recap – April 24, 2021

Trevor Bauer got his rematch against the San Diego Padres this past weekend, and it may have been even better than the last one. We got celebrations from both sides, and we saw some pretty great pitching from Bauer and Snell in part two of the two teams’ meeting. The last time these two teams met, Bauer went six innings giving up only one run on three hits. Something to keep an eye on this matchup was Bauer vs. Machado after Manny got the best of him in round one and Trevor said he’d make some adjustments.

FIRST INNING

The game started with a bang (literally) when Tatís smoked the second pitch of the game to center, giving the Padres a 1-0 lead out of the gate. As he rounded first base, he mocked Bauer by covering his eye as a way to troll Bauer, who was striking out batters with one eye closed in spring training. He’d retire the next three batters, striking out two of them. One of them being Machado, who Bauer threw three straight sliders to, and Machado chased two of them out of the zone.

SECOND INNING

Myers stole second base after leading off the inning with a base hit and came around to score on Profar’s one-out single giving the Padres a 2-0 lead. Bauer induced a fly ball and a ground ball to get out of the inning.

THIRD INNING

By the third inning, Bauer started to look locked in when he set down the Padres for the first time in the game. He struck out Tatis and Grisham, both on the four-seamer. Bauer faced Machado for a second time, and if you guessed that all he threw was sliders, you’d be correct. He threw four straight sliders to Manny before getting him to ground out on the 5th.

FOURTH INNING

Bauer’s fourth inning began with a strikeout to Hosmer, his first of the night on the knuckle curve. He got Myers to fly out and Cronenworth to pop out, retiring the side on only eight pitches.

FIFTH INNING

In the fifth, Bauer faced the bottom three of the Padres order and made easy work of them. Profar popped out in foul territory, and Caratini struck out on three straight knuckle curves. Snell made solid contact on a fastball but lined out to Turner to end the inning. At this point, Bauer had retired 11 straight.

SIXTH INNING

Things got interesting in the sixth of Bauer’s rematch against the Padres when Tatís hit his second home run of the game, giving the Padres a 3-2 lead after the Dodgers tied it up in the fourth. Tatís went all out again on his celebration, yelling at his dugout, doing the stutter-step at third, and then hitting the Conor McGregor strut (that we all know Bauer loves to do) after he crossed the plate. After the game, Bauer spoke about this and said how he thinks it’s great for the game to see players celebrate like this. And he’s 100% correct. It’s SO MUCH FUN.

However, there’s so much more to this than just the celebration. After the game, some videos were going around accusing Tatís of peeking at Smith’s signs as he was putting them down. The pitch was so far off the plate that many people didn’t know how he could pull that pitch to left-center. Bauer quote tweeted one of these videos this morning and tagged Tatís, which started a pretty hilarious back and forth. He also broke this down on his YouTube channel, which we have linked here. Now back to the game, Grisham grounded out, followed up by a Machado strikeout (five straight sliders), and a Myers strikeout would end Bauer’s night and the sixth inning.

After the game, Bauer spoke to the media about his outing and said he thought he was “really good.” Any time we can get six innings from a starter and only give up two or three earned runs, it feels like a successful outing. Bauer made the adjustments needed to retire Machado and kept the game close enough to give the offense a chance. For a complete game recap from Bauer’s outing against the Padres, click here.
