Slow Week at the Plate for Gavin Lux

Gavin Lux Recap: April 5 – 11

Lux came into the series against Oakland after a hot start in Colorado, but the same success did not translate over offensively. He was still hitting the ball extremely hard and played solid defense, but the balls just weren’t dropping for him like they were previously. It was a slow week at the plate for Gavin Lux, but weeks like this are bound to happen, so let’s jump into this and see exactly how it went.

Gavin Lux vs. Athletics

April 5 – Pinch Running for Bellinger

Lux had the day off after playing in the first four games against Colorado, but a late-inning injury to Cody Bellinger had Lux in the game as a pinch-runner in the ninth. He ended up playing second base in the bottom half of the inning.  One ball hit to him to throw Canha out at first was his only defensive action of the night.

April 6 – Thrown Out At Home

In Tuesday night’s game, Lux worked a walk in his first plate appearance of the night. He ended up thrown out at home on Mookie’s ground out to first. He ran on contact, but Mookie hit the ball so hard, Lux had no chance at home plate. It seemed super unlikely the A’s would’ve been able to turn a double play had Lux held up, so I’m not entirely sure if he went on his own or if that was the game plan, but it didn’t work in the Dodgers favor. He would have nothing to show for his next two at-bats, which is unfortunate considering he crushed one at 106.8 MPH, and it was a double-play ball. In his final at-bat of the game, he lined a ball back up the middle for his first hit of the series.

April 7 – One Hit Game

In Lux’s first at-bat against Jesus Luzardo, he went opposite field to beat the shift. His only hit of the game, he was quickly erased on a fielder’s choice. Lux went onto ground out twice, struck out, and fly out to finish off his game.

April 8 – Off Day for the Dodgers.

Gavin Lux vs. Nationals

April 9 – Home Opener

Lux made a beautiful diving play to rob Zimmerman of a base hit in the Dodgers home opener, but that was really all he had going for him. Granted, the entire team didn’t do much offensively outside of Justin Turner in this one. Lux would finish his day going 0-for-3.  He also picked up a shiny new ring.

April 10 – CT3 Home Run

In his first at-bat of the game, Lux hit a ground ball that registered off the bat at 101.3 MPH, but with the infield in, they were able to get the runner at home, with Lux reaching first safely on a fielder’s choice. He would come around to score a run that inning on Chris Taylor’s home run. This was another rough night at the plate for Lux as he struck out twice looking and lined out.

April 11 – The End of a Slow Week At the Plate for Lux

Lux had another ofer game at the plate in the final game against the Nationals of the series. He hit leadoff, and in his first at-bat, he popped out to short on the first pitch he saw. Scherzer got him to swing and miss at a cutter out of the zone in his second AB. For his third AB, Lux hit the ball right at the first baseman, doubling up Beaty before he could return. He faced lefty Brad Hand in his final plate appearance and pulled the ball to the first baseman for an easy out.

Lux came out of this week with only two hits under his belt, but he also only struck out three times in 15 at-bats. He drew a walk, which I’m hoping to see more of from his as the season progresses. Lux will run into slow weeks at the plate throughout the season just like every other player will, but if he keeps barreling the ball up and making hard contact, these hits will fall for him sooner rather than later. If Lux can keep doing what he’s doing defensively, there’s no doubt in my mind his bat will catch up to him as well.
