Bauer Comes Out Strong, Falters in Late Innings Again

Trevor Bauer was in one appearance this past week against the Oakland Athletics. He went 6.1 innings. Then came the 7th and gave up four runs, continuing his trend of late innings woes. He wanted to step up and get his second win of the season but he did not get it. Bauer looked as good as he did in his previous outing. He was not throwing no-hitter stuff but he definitely was doing great.

In the first, he had a 1-2-3 inning with little hard contact. His curveball looked good but was missing some spots early.  In the second inning, Trevor got into a little trouble after allowing a two-out single to  Seth Brown and follows that with a walk. He settles in and strikes out Elvis Andrus looking.

For the third, Bauer strikes out the sides.  Looked like he had a chip on his shoulder for men getting into scoring position in the previous inning.

Slight Loss of Control

Fourth Inning: First batter (Laureano) Bauer hits. Strikes out the following batter but Laureano steals second in the process. Laureano steals third and gets home base as Bauer throws a wild pitch.  Ties the game 1-1. Gets Brown looking on strikes to end the inning. The fifth was a 1-2-3 inning, getting his 7th strikeout of the day.

Bauer leads off the sixth inning by hitting Mark Canha, his second HBP of the game. After that, he faced three batters and got out of the inning – all on flyouts or pop-ups.

Late Innings Woes

7th Inning: 5th pitch of the at-bat to Chapman he hits a rocket off Bauer to bring the Dodgers lead down to 3-2. Ends up striking out two batters before getting taken out for Knebel.

After his outing, Bauer was found in some scandal with league officials. Bauer was suspected of using a suspicious substance to help him with grip on the baseballs. Several of his game-used balls were collected for analysis, reportedly with discoloration and a “sticky” feel to them.  He and his agent have denied these claims. Dave Roberts has said that Trevor has been singled out by MLB officials because of his outspoken nature on the subject.

Can’t wait to see this unfold and when we get more news about what happens.  Make sure to come back here to find out how this goes.
