Funky Muncy Back For Season Opener

Funky Muncy Back for Season Opener vs The Rockies – April 1-4

Thank goodness Muncy got hot for the Dodgers season opener against the Colorado Rockies.  After an uneven Spring Training, he showed promise in the Freeway Series.  And while every Dodger seemed to have some struggles in the oddity-laden opener, Max finished the weekend with some good footwork at first and a .313 batting average.  Funky Muncy is back!

April 1 – Opening Day

At the plate, Muncy delivered with two hits, an RBI, and a walk in five plate appearances.  One of those hits?  A triple in the 9th inning.  On offense, he was a little more uneven.  He dug out several low balls at first for an out, but also bobbled a barehanded catch on a bunt on the 3rd that allowed a run to score.

Dodgers lose to the Rockies 5-8

April 2 – A Walk, A Hit

A steadier performance at first with mostly routine plays.  At the plate, he scored the first run of the game, an RBI single in the first.  He also walked in the 8th but nothing came of it.  It’s interesting to note that Muncy’s RBI single came on the first pitch of the AB.  Muncy usually likes to work the count, most of his at-bats four pitches or more.

The Dodgers won against the Rockies 11-6

April 3 – Reaching on an Error

Another good night at the plate for Muncy with two hits and an error from Rockies first base player C.J. Cron that got him on base.  He racked up another RBI in the 6th, sending Seager home to score. And once more Muncy got a hit on the first pitch – a double in the 9th off of Rockies Reliever Daniel Bard.

April 4 – A Walk and A Chase

Muncy walked in the first inning but was tagged out at third during a sacrifice fly from Lux that turned into a double play.  Luckily, Turner crossed home before the tag was laid down, so the run did score.  The only other thing of note from Muncy in this game came in the eighth inning when Muncy chased out of the zone to strike out – a rarity for Max.  Of course, this was on the seventh pitch of the at bat, which is Extremely Typical Max.

The Dodgers defeated the Rockies 4-2

All in all, pretty good effort.  The Dodgers needed Muncy hot for the season opener and they definitely got it!  Let’s hope he continues to steamroll through the next series against the Oakland Athletics.  Let’s hope Funky Munch is back for good.
