Coronavirus and the likely suspension of Baseball.
MLB execs and all 30 MLB teams are currently having a conference call about the ongoing spread of the Coronavirus, and what to do in regards to Baseball. Shortly after this conference call, it’s widely expected for the Baseball season to be suspended for the time being, until the safety of players, fans and the countless workers can be guaranteed. This isn’t necessarily surprising considering most major sports have already suspended their seasons. This is probably the best course of action to ensure everyone’s safety and prevent the spread of the virus. As a fan, I understand health is the most important thing here, but still, this sucks. Life is full of hardships and struggles, for some sports and Baseball is their temporary escape. In theory, yes Baseball is just a game. A child’s game we loved from the start or a game we grew to love because someone had a strong connection to a team and thus the sport. For a lot of us, it’s more than just a sport. It’s a getaway, the stadium a place where we can gather with friends and 50 thousand strangers to enjoy a ballgame, laugh, cheer and be upset altogether. The excitement of watching Clayton Kershaw a future Hall of Famer, Watching Walker Buehler carve-up hitters, Watching Justin Turner put on a masterclass of an at-bat, The MVP Cody Bellinger doing ridiculous things. Baseball for all intents and purposes is just a game, but for some of us, there’s more meaning than that. Again, life has its hardships and its full of craziness. For 3+ hours we get to escape these issues and just sit back drink a beer, soda, water or any alcoholic beverage and just enjoy the sport we love. We get to forget about things, albeit important things or not so important things and just get lost in the sights and sounds of this beautiful game that’s baseball. If at home, the sounds of the announcers making calls, If at the ballpark the sounds of thousands of fans collectively groaning or cheering. The cracks of the bat hitting the ball, the grunts of the pitchers, the sounds we’ve grown to love. Make no mistake, there are real-life issues and the suspension of Baseball is the right thing to do for the health of everyone. For the time being though, Our escape and tranquility are gone.
