A Camelback Ranch Survival Guide
Spring Training. The mythological home for Major League players and a myriad of hopefuls all jockeying for a spot on their respective teams roster. It is a time for players to show themselves off to coaches, scouts, and you the fans. Here are a few tips and tricks for handling Spring Training like a seasoned vet.
- WEATHER CHECK!!! Arizona is pretty straight forward when it comes to the weather, usually you just have sun with more sun. Unfortunately though even Arizona can throw you a curve ball. Imagine the horror of dressing for a bright sunny day only to get smacked with clouds, chills, and light showers. That kind of weather will dampen(pun definitely intended) the fun and experience of Spring Training. So please check the weather and dress accordingly.
- Parking isn’t as bad as you’d think, it’s free and it’s organized quite well. However it is my opinion that if you can, take a Uber or Lyft to the park. It’s the least amount of hassle and it makes getting in and out very simple. If you do drive be prepared for 15 minute walk to the stadium. It is very scenic and is loaded with history as you walk and some really nice spots to take a picture or two.
- Being a fan and going to see your favorite team is one thing, going to see your favorite team and being able to interact with them is even better. Player interaction at spring training is the best part about it in my book and you’ll find players everywhere the more you explore. There’s is etiquette though that as fans we should all follow. Always remember, players are people and they are there to work, if they look like they’re in the middle of work don’t badger or patronize them because remember, they owe you nothing. If you want an autograph be prepared, have your pen ready with the cap off so a player can grab, sign, and go. Selfies are even easier for a player so don’t be afraid to ask for one, and let’s be real what’d be cooler than coming back at a later date to get that selfie signed?
- Now.. for the important information. On weekends you need to get there no later than 8am and I would aim even earlier if you’re able. The weekdays aren’t as packed but you still want to arrive early. The facility doesn’t open until 9am but most people start lining up outside between 6-6:30am. This is just the beginning of standing in line. So bring plenty of water/snacks or eat a lot before going. There are no bathrooms available until the facility opens. If you’re going with someone there is a CVS less than 2 mins from the field. Have them save your spot and go to the bathroom there. Remember parking is free. After 9:00 am though it’s a free for all and spot holding ceases to be an option. The best spots to get autographs seem to be at the main gate that players walk on and off the field from. They tend to start there if signing but middle spots can get skipped over so stand accordingly. Players don’t start making their way out until 9:30-10:00 so there is a lot of standing around and waiting.
- As it gets closer to game time you’ll want to start heading towards your seats and hit the concession stands before the rest of the crowd gets the same idea. HEED MY WARNING! There are no cup holders at your seats. DO NOT over do it and arrive at your seats with a Dodger Dog, Helmet Nachos, and a Margarita expecting a holder for your drink. If you’re ok setting your drink in the ground then do what you do, if not then I suggest you pace yourself.
- If you’re going to a day game and you’ve checked the weather and it’s a sunny day be warned.. you will feel all of Arizona’s sun and there isn’t any shade unless you’re sitting underneath the awning behind home plate. Do not attempt to bring an umbrella, it will be confiscated at the gate, and any sunscreen should be applied before reaching the gates.
- Walk around, as the game is going there’s no reason to sit and bake in your seat, so why not take a stroll around the facility? Camelback is a really large facility and you never know who you’re going to run into so go stretch your legs and save yourself from the heat.
Hopefully this is helpful as you make your journey to this illustrious land. If I missed something that you think should be in this guide send me a message on twitter @UnicornKing138, your feedback is always welcome. GO DODGERS!
